General Jewelry Care
Daily Habits
- Last on, first off: Put your jewelry on after makeup, perfume, or hair products — and take it off before
bedtime. - Save it from sweat & soap: Avoid wearing delicate pieces while exercising, showering, swimming, or
cleaning. - Gentle handling: Always pick jewelry up by its band or metal, not by the stone.
Cleaning
- DIY sparkle: Mix warm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Use a soft brush to gently clean, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
- Avoid harsh chemicals: Bleach, ammonia, and other cleaners can damage both stones and metals.
- Pro cleanings: Stop by Diamond Hut at least once a year for a complimentary cleaning and inspection. We’ll check prongs, clasps, and settings to keep everything secure.
Storage
- Soft & separate: Store jewelry in fabric-lined boxes or soft pouches to avoid scratches.
- Travel smart: Use organizers with compartments to keep chains untangled and gemstones safe.
Gemstone Care
Diamonds
- Though the hardest gem, diamonds still attract oils and dirt. Regular gentle cleaning keeps their fire alive. Avoid storing diamonds together, as they can scratch each other.
Sapphires & Rubies
- Durable, but still prone to scratches if knocked hard. Clean with warm soapy water; avoid harsh ultrasonic cleaners for stones with visible inclusions.
Emeralds
- Softer and often treated with oils to enhance color. Never use ultrasonic cleaners or harsh detergents. Stick to a damp cloth and gentle wipe.
Amethyst, Citrine, Quartz
- Relatively durable but can fade with prolonged sunlight exposure. Store away from direct light and clean with mild soapy water.
Opals & Pearls
- Delicate and porous — avoid chemicals, perfumes, and excessive water. Wipe gently with a soft damp cloth. Store in a breathable pouch (not plastic) and never in airtight boxes.
Topaz & Garnet
- Prone to chips if hit at the right angle. Keep them separate from harder stones and clean with warm,
soapy water.
Metal Care
Gold (Yellow, White, Rose)
- Avoid chlorine and pools: Chlorine weakens gold’s structure over time, making it brittle and prone to breakage.
- Skip lotions & perfumes: Oils and chemicals can dull gold’s surface and cause buildup in crevices.
- Care tip: White gold often benefits from rhodium replating every few years to restore its bright finish.
Platinum
- Durable but not immune: Though strong, platinum can still scratch if worn in rough activities like swimming or gym workouts.
- Chemical caution: Perfumes, lotions, and chlorine can leave a residue that dulls platinum’s natural luster.
- Care tip: Platinum develops a soft patina over time. Many love this “aged” look, but professional polishing can bring back its mirror shine.
Sterling Silver
- Avoid water & humidity: Moisture speeds up tarnishing, so take silver off before swimming or showering.
- Skip lotions & sprays: Creams and perfumes can accelerate tarnish and leave stubborn residues.
- Care tip: Regular use of a silver polishing cloth will keep it bright. Store in anti-tarnish pouches when not worn.
Stainless Steel & Titanium
- Resistant but not invincible: While they don’t tarnish easily, swimming in saltwater or pools can leave deposits that dull the finish.
- Lotions & oils: These can leave a film on the surface, making the metal look cloudy.
- Care tip: Wipe regularly with a soft cloth and rinse occasionally with mild soap and water for a fresh, polished look.
Watch Care
Wearing
- Routine winding: For mechanical watches, wind them gently (never force the crown). For automatics, wearing them regularly keeps them powered.
- Mind the water: Respect the water-resistance rating — and remember, “water-resistant” does not mean “shower safe.” Steam and soaps damage seals.
- Magnet warning: Keep watches away from speakers, magnets, and phones; magnetism can affect accuracy.
Cleaning
- Case & crystal: Wipe regularly with a microfiber cloth.
- Bracelets & straps: Metal: Wash with mild soap and water, then dry completely.
- Leather: Avoid moisture; condition occasionally with leather cream.
- Rubber/Silicone: Rinse after saltwater or chlorine exposure.
Servicing
- Movement checkups: Have your watch serviced every 3–5 years (or as recommended by the manufacturer).
- Battery life: Replace promptly when dead to prevent leakage.
